A DAUGHTER THAT DID NOT ACCEPT BEING MANIPULATED BY HER MOTHER GIVES RISE TO A LAWSUIT

“M” is a wounded mother that does not want to give her name to the media. She says that she could not hold onto and almost lost her daughter because her daughter had drunk Ayahuasca. As a result of this erroneous interpretation, she has decided to demonise me and ayahuasca, specifically by filing a lawsuit for FRAUD, SECT AND DRUGS against me and the organization I founded.

This woman is called MARIELA MENDES COSSE. Her daughter consumed ayahuasca with another group called Santo Daime. Her daughter has never come to one of our retreats as this was many months or years ago and we were not in Uruguay and where we have only just established ourselves. According to Uruguayan version of the newspaper “El País” (see complete article below), it is clear that this woman is intensely angry with me even though she doesn’t know me, nor do we know her daughter (although I am currently looking for her to offer her a retreat for the psychotherapeutic use of Ayahuasca as a gift). The only thing that this unhappy mother knows is that her daughter experienced ayahuasca and apparently rebelled a bit, because perhaps she realized how enslaved she was, and her mother then couldn’t think of anything better than to getting pissed off with me and with ayahuasca.

As far as I am concerned, I actively work against all type of sects, even though she characterized me as the guru of one that definitely doesn’t exist. I am in favour of the family, and of the emotional bonds between parents and their children and this is why we use systemic therapy. To heal these wounds with our parents.  As a matter of fact, I deeply love my 6 children and my 5 grandchildren. I invest a great amount of energy in preserving and enriching relationships inside my family, and also those of the families that come to my retreats.  IN OCTOBER I WILL HOLD A RETREAT EXCLUSIVELY FOR FAMILIES IN URUGUAY, AND I WILL BRING MY CHILDREN FROM SPAIN TO SHARE HOW MARVELOUS IT IS TO BE UNITED FROM A PLACE OF RESPECT AND FREEDOM.

On the other hand, our organization is a business in accordance with the laws of all the countries where we operate. We have the support of health professionals, of expert therapists that coordinate our inner evolution retreats with the psychotherapeutic use of Ayahuasca and other natural shamanic medicines brought from the Amazon, and of a great international team of lawyers that defend us these types of misunderstandings.

This woman has gone to all lengths before the law and branches of the Uruguayan government to impede the arrival of our international organization that brings real solutions to thousands of people all around the world. But she has not been successful.  Even so, I have been summoned to appear before a Judge in Colonia, and I have travelled specially from Spain where I live, in order to testify alongside other witnesses about the activities that we organize.

Since this woman learned that we were coming to Uruguay, she started threatening us and attacking us on all our web pages. She posted insults in this blog and then filed an ill-founded accusation. This is why our lawyers are going to take legal action against her in the following days, after we appear before the court.

Ever since we began with our retreats in Colonia, Uruguay, the police have visited the place where we organize them in a pleasant manner. We have provided them with samples of the substances we use, and all analyses came back negative (proving that they are not illegal drugs). We also invited the police to return as many times as they deem it necessary, because we have nothing to hide.

MESSAGE FROM MARIELA MENDES COSSE (from Uruguay) sent through Facebook to my personal messenger:

Do not dare to come to Uruguay with your philosophy, it nearly killed my daughter. I am telling you, ayahuasca is illegal in Uruguay.I almost lost my daughter and I definitely lost a part of her; take your philosophy to the Amazon, but not here, NOT IN URUGUAY. You blocked me from all your web pages. Keep Ayahuasca away from Uruguay, it is ILLEGAL. THERE IS NOTHING INTERNTIONAL TO IT, IT IS ILLEGAL HERE.

Mariela Mendez Cosse

HELLO MARIELA, AYAHUASCA IS NOT ILLEGAL IN URUGUAY. IF YOU ALMOST LOST YOUR DAUGHTER, IT WAS NOT HER LIFE THAT WAS IN DANGER BUT YOUR CONTROL OVER HER. YOU HAVE BEEN BLOCKED FROM ALL OUR WEB PAGES BECAUSE OF YOUR THREATS AND ILL-FOUNDED ACCUSATIONS AGAINST US.

A WOMAN WHO IS RESENTFUL BECAUSE OF AN IDEA AGAINST AYAHUASCA ATTACKS ALBERTO VARELA AND AYAHUASCA INTERNATIONAL.

You can see in this text the enormous effort this woman is making to get her revenge against someone who doesn’t exist.   It is clear that neither the law nor the authorities can support such a neurotic idea, with no proof or legal grounding.

ARTICLE IN URUGUAYAN NEWSPAPER “EL PAÍS”:

Uruguayan newspaper “El Pais” published an article titled “Crusade against ayahuasca” signed by Juan Estolari. It calls attention to and alerts of the presence of a sect called Ayahuasca International in Uruguay , whose leader (a  controversial Argentine guru) planned to celebrate a ceremony in Colonia del Sacramento last May 25th.

The complainant, who asked not to be identified (presented here as “M”), bombarded the authorities with written documents alerting about the dangers of this sect “which uses the disguise of healing therapy”, she claims. Let’s take a look to one of these missives:

To whom it may concern: Narcotics Police Department, Interpol and the Public Health Ministry.

This is to bring an official complaint based on a personal investigation I conducted these past few days, after learning that a sect going by the name of Ayahuasca International will be holding a conference in Uruguay. Mrs. Alicia Pla, with whom I had the pleasure of speaking by telephone a few days ago, is in charge of defining toxic substances. She said that ayahuasca is illegal in our country because it contains DMT (dimethyltriptamine), and thus you must report this to her so that she may recognize it as an illegal drug and legally prohibit it.

For all this, I urgently request this Ayahuasca International conference be stopped, both in Uruguay and in all other countries where this root is prohibited.

This sect is active in more than 100 countries and its director, Alberto Jose Varela, has criminal records in Spain for these activities. This type of movement is a scam that makes people who follow it sick, and even puts them at risk of death.

Five days ago, I spoke over the phone with Deputy Superintendent Ramos, from Montevideo Narcotics. At that time, the Deputy Superintendent said he did not know if it fell under the jurisdiction of Narcotics. I am still waiting for an answer.

Without further ado, M.

She didn’t only reach out to law enforcement and health officials. , Tired of being turned down by public officials, her campaign reached the National Director of the Board of Narcotics, Diego Olivera, to whom she directed the following letter:

Dear Sr/Madam,

I am sorry that it is has been necessary for me to communicate with the Deputy Secretary of the Office of the President in order to be able to contact you. Nobody on the Board ever acknowledged receiving any of my communications.

The task was exhausting, and still is. I have called the Central Office, Narcotics and Interpol endlessly, and have I never received any response until now.

I am exhausted and overwhelmed as a social worker, humanist and citizen after all I had to go through to provide you with an information you should already have.

Without further ado, M.

Finally, the National Director of the Narcotics Board replied the following:

Dear Mrs M.,

Firstly, I would like to thank you for contacting me. We are share the same concerns (that are responsibilities in our case) to work for social well-being and public health.

I have closely followed what you have written to us and have arranged for representatives from the Public Health and the Drug Board set up a meeting with you to hear your concerns.

There are two important aspects to bear in mind: 1) As with any other drug, the consumption of Ayahuasca has its risks and may be harmful for human health. 2) The consumption of drugs in Uruguay is not outside the realms of criminal prosecution.

Within this context, you can count on our commitment for alerting on and preventing any harmful effects that may be caused by the consumption of this substance for public health (…).

In our country, there is also no legislation regulating the concoction known as “ayahuasca”. Notwithstanding, this does not imply that as a specialized institution there is nothing we can do. We are tasked with promoting public health, preventing damages and avoiding harmful consumption of all types of chemical or vegetable substances. We are also responsible for listening to all different voices and opinions in our society, one of which is yours (and a very important one, indeed).

Regards,

Lic. TS Diego Martín Olivera. Secretary General. National Board of Drugs

For this, the complainant wrote to the President of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay: Tabaré Vázquez. This is what she wrote:

Dear Sir,

With the greatest respect, I request you take action on this matter urgently. DO NOT ALLOW MORE DRUGS IN OUR SOCIETY.

As a citizen, I did the appropriate thing with the information I found on the internet.

You must not allow Ayahuasca International into Uruguay. It is a sect that works in more than 100 countries disguising itself with healing arguments and rhetoric.

Mr. President, I voted for you. I am the daughter of a Tupa, I work for my community, for the well-being of my society and the future of our children. I enclose all the relevant information and my complaint. I am deeply sad. Everyone is ignoring this, and it is incredibly serious.

Without further ado, M.

After all these attempts at engaging the machinery of the State, the Uruguayan citizen telephoned the newspaper “El País” claiming she contacted them “about a sect called Ayahuasca International. The director of this group, Argentine vermin, is going to organize a retreat in Colonia de Sacramento this May 25th.”

As published in the Uruguayan newspaper: “I have already alerted the authorities, but they won’t listen to me. I want ayahuasca to be declared illegal. It is a drug that produces altered states of consciousness and hallucinations. In Uruguay, it caused the death of four people. My daughter was a victim as well. They took her to the sect but I was able to save her, I caught her in time. Still, she has never been the same.”

When asked about the leader of the sect, she stated “His name is Alberto José Varela. He has a blog and a Facebook page about his phony healing practice. I will provide you with all the information I have and all the letters I sent to the government, to Narcotics and to the Office of the President. Do you think anything can be done?” In response, the newspaper published all this information and alerted the public.

Varela and his accomplices are said to have been persecuted in Europe. “Within the span of only 45 days, two police interventions of Ayahuasca International took place. First in Berlin and now in Colonia. Police operations involving scores of policemen stopped people from using Ayahuasca to heal themselves. We are being chased like criminals”, claims Alberto José Varela in his blog. “The same happened in Spain 9 years ago, when a persecution campaign was launched with more than 100 policemen involved. People in possession of Ayahuasca or receiving it by post were brought to trial.”
