ELMER MUÑOZ, A SHIPIBO SHAMAN VISITING EUROPE, TELL US ABOUT HIS NATIVE VILLAGE AND ITS PEOPLE.
He has travelled 24 hours down a river to get to Pucalpa and call us and let us know that he was ready to come to Europe. This is a letter he wrote to Alberto Varela.
I’m writing because I have something I´d like to tell about the Shipibo people, we live along the banks of Ucayali river, which is located in the middle of the jungle high up in the mountains, where we work the agriculture and sow fields that give us many different fruits of the jungle, we fish at the river and lagoons, we build our houses and roofs with a type of palm tree called Shebon, everything we need comes from the jungle.
Each family has their own home, and it’s our custom to always be inviting amongst neighbours and eat together, usually fish that we catch from our canoes with our fishing nets or bows and arrows, and rice that we harvest ourselves.
I live in the south of the Ucayali river, which is 24 hours by boat against the current from the city of Pucalpa, before we ever had motorboats we used to go by canoe and it used to take us months before we reached a town like Pucalpa, luckily now we have motors at our disposal. Well, I want to go to Europe because my European friends who already visited my village and stayed at my house told me many stories about the people who needed help with both medicinal and spiritual treatments, and they also told me many times that there are lots of people in the world who should be helped with the medicine ayahuasca, and that some of them couldn’t make it to the jungle because of the great distance and their busy working lives, that’s when I said that one day I would have to come to Europe to be able to help many people, because that is what my heart tells me to do, since I’m indeed one who loves his fellow human beings.
Besides that, in the area where I live there aren’t many shamans left anymore, now I have my son who is learning all the wisdom that my grandfather taught me and left behind, that is why now is the moment to fulfil the promise I made to him of going to Europe in the future and helping many people from many different places.
Brother Alberto, here I send you some pictures of the village that I come from, where I was born and raised.
Shipibo, from the Peruvian jungle.
