SPEAKING WELL OR SPEAKING ILL OF SOMEONE – What lies behind value judgements?

FAMOUS QUOTE FROM SALVADOR DALÍ, SPANISH PAINTER:

“Whether they speak well or ill, what is important is that they talk about me… although I confess that I like it when they speak ill, because that means that things are going very well for me.”

“No one speaks of mediocre people, and when they do, they only speak marvels.”

“THEY BARK, SANCHO, A SIGN THAT WE RIDE” This famous phrase, attributed to the Quijote, is really apocryphal. Cervantes never wrote it, but I admit that it describes perfectly the relationship between gossip and the fact that the person criticised is advancing; almost surely in a more effective way than the detractors, who generally have not even started to walk their own paths.
